When you have made the decision to buy a used car you
should be aware that it does not just involve an exchange of
money and a handshake. There are forms that need to be filed
to make the transaction legal. The most overlooked form is
called a used car bill of sale.
To register and title a used car purchased you need to have
a used car bill of sale. A used car bill of sale form is
simple to fill out, but necessary. The specifications for a
bill of sale may vary from state to state.
To help you understand and obtain a bill of sale the
Department of Motor Vehicles has a website (DMV.ORG) that
contains all of the information that will give you specific
instructions on how to obtain a bill of sale. This site
gives you access to your state's version of this form. This
form can be downloaded, free of charge, directly from the
website.
You can, however, drive to your local DMV office or the
country clerk's office to get a bill of sale form. If your
state does not have an official used car bill of sale form,
DMV.ORG supplies a generic bill of sale that is accepted by
most states. The generic form contains all of the vital
information: vehicle identification number, model, year, and
the purchase price of the vehicle.
The necessity of a used car bill of sale is so important in
that it verifies that you are the legal owner of the vehicle
purchased. Most jurisdictions use the bill of sale to
determine the sales tax on the purchase also.
Now that you are aware of what a bill of sale is, make sure
one is obtained before the purchase of any vehicle is
finalized. You can go online while the seller is with you to
obtain a copy and get all of the required signatures needed.
